Back when my dad was a kid in the early 70's, he was always using my red Volksboat. At one point during a summer, some of his friends came over his house saying, "Hey Dan, there's a kid out there with your same boat!!!"
So my dad threw his Volksboat in the water, putted up to the kid and got to talkin with him. Turns out his parents bought the thing for him, and he really didn't like it. So long story short, he sold it (the hull) to my dad for 35 bucks!!! My dad kept it for about three days and used it a few times. (It turns out the hull of this one feels totally different than my red one.) And after a few days, one of his friends says, "Y'know, I've always liked your Volksboat....." So my dad sold it to his friend for the same amount, 35 bucks. After awhile they repainted it from it's red over original pink, to white. (He painted my red one at the same time, so ordered a bunch of white Imron, along withth red.) Then at some point that friend sold it to a different friend, but never really took it, and it just sat around at the first friends house for 30 some years. Every once in awhile we'd bug him about it, but they didn't want to get rid of it cause it was a "collectible" or something. But we bugged this time after a few years, and he finally realized he just doesn't have the time for all his projects he has (an old Pen Yan being one of them) and just gave it back to us. Along with three antique motors too!! I was about ready to pass out when we were done! Both from being overwhelmed and from carrying those heavy motors back to my truck!! lol. He wouldn't even take the $100 we tried to give him. (Adjusted for inflation from the original $35! lol.) So that's it's story. It was originally pink, was painted red at one point, then sprayed white when my dad owned it. Now it's ours again!! I think we're going to put it all back to original, steering tubes, windshield, PINK and all! Should be fun! -SaltyVolksBronco (Pete) |
