Well, after spending a big chunk of my life restoring the MATTHEWS 42' Martinique Express and then the 1955 Aristo Craft 14' Torpedo, I recently took another 'project' under my wing. I promise this will be my LAST!!!
I had been watching this boat and was getting discouraged at the treatment she was receiving. It would be covered with a blue plastic tarp until it biodegraded, then sit exposed to the weather for months before receiving another tarp. This cycle of neglect continued for the 4-plus years that I was watching her. There was just too much history here to lose. She is the Miss Madison/U-6 (winner of the 1971 Gold Cup Race held in her hometown of Madison, IN), that was the inspiration for the movie "Madison". This Les Staudacher unlimited hydroplane was originally built for Sam DuPont in 1959 as the Nitrogen Too/U-79-2. The city of Madison Indiana acquired this boat in 1963 and campaigned her with community sponsorship. She appeared in the movie "Madison" as the 'wrecked' Miss Madison; another boat was painted in Miss Madison colors for the running scenes as the 'real' one was not restored to running condition in time for making the movie. She is in the same condition as in the movie, with weathering from being parked outside. I now have her indoors until I can begin the running restoration; I have dried her out plus cleaned her up, inside and out. Power is an Allison V-12, a WWII aircraft engine, producing about 2000 hp. This resto' will not be as quick as my Aristo Craft (1 year), but hopefully not as long as the MATTHEWS (17-1/2 years)! Enjoy, Randy Mueller Gig Harbor, WA |
